MAKE A GREAT IMPRESSION IN YOUR NEXT JOB INTERVIEW

You just received excellent news! You are invited to an interview with your potential new employer! At first you might be very excited about the news of being one step closer to your dream job…. but soon worries may creep in. Worries such as preparing for the interview, how to make a good impression or how to sell yourself, may start to slowly turn that excitement into dread.

At The David Legacy, we want to empower job seekers in such a way that the glimpse of excitement never fades – being prepared, confident and excited in the process. We have compiled a quick guide on how to prepare for your job interview and present your best possible self.

1.     Always do thorough research on the employer company

Make sure you know which industry the company is in, the company’s culture, values, and business offerings. Having done research on the company, will ensure you have increased confidence in your interview by using the information as reference point in your discussions.

2.     Make sure you have re-read the job description of the vacancy

Prepare some examples of how your skills, knowledge and traits clearly aligns with the requirements of the role. This will make it easy for the interviewer to see how you fit in the role and makes you stand out from others.

3.     The first five minutes is crucial to creating a good impression

Make sure you bring positive energy, enthusiasm, and confidence to the interview as this will leave a great first impression on the interviewer. This might just distinguish you from the other candidates.

4.     Ask the right questions

Employers want you to ask them questions during the interview. It demonstrates that you are seriously thinking about how it is to work there.

Some questions you can ask during your interview:

·      Please give me an example of where someone has lived out your values.

·      Please describe the person who would best suit this role.

·      How does the process look like going forward?

·      Can you give a brief description of what a typical day in my role will look like?

5.     Practice, practice, practice

Try and do a mock interview with family and friends to make sure you are comfortable and gaining confidence for the real deal.

6.     Know your strengths as well as your development areas

Before your interview, prepare some examples of your strengths and development areas that you can share during your interview. Being able to talk about the things you are good at, as well as those development areas you are working on, will show the interviewer that you are self-aware.

7.     Remember to SMILE

Why is it important to remember to smile during your interview? Research has proven that body language is of utmost importance during interviews. A candidate’s smile is the primary form of their body language. Employers want to see your personality and energy shining through during your interview, which is becoming as important as having the required qualification and skills. When you smile during an interview, it portrays that you are confident, friendly and positive, which are qualities that any employer wants.

We hope that these tips may have eased some anxiety and increased your confidence in the interviewing process. At The David Legacy, we offer coaching sessions, where one of our “thinking partners” can support you in building your confidence and selling your best self to make that great impression in your next interview.
